Vintage 1970s or after
In the field of fashion, the early 1970s is characterised by a trend FOR a certain ethnic look: caftans, exotic prints, fringed shawls, full skirts, boleros, ruffled blouses, flared trousers, mini tops and crushed velvets. High fashion was struggling to survive. More and more couturiers began to sell their names on scarves, sun-glasses and scents and began their pret-a-porter or ready-to-wear departments. The whole conception of fashion was changing, allowing different styles, different lengths, different materials to be in vogue at the same time.
The same was true in the field of jewellery. The style of the 1970s does not submit to any aesthetic rule, and the whole decade shows very little unity. Whilst it is relatively easy to recognise a piece of 1960s jewellery thanks to its asymmetrical geometricism.By the mid-1970s the 'modernity'of geometrical jewellery is definitely considered demode.
During the 1970s, the trend started by the most important jewellery houses of differentiating between, on one hand, unique creations set with exceptional gemstones, mostly made on commission, and, on the other hand, more readily available products at affordable prices for a wider but still discriminating and demanding clientele, was consolidated. More women than ever were now buying their own jewels and the most popular jewellery tended to be in the medium price range. The phenomenon was equally evident on both sides of the Atlantic and jewellery houses from Tiffany to Van Cleef and Arpels began seasonal collections that were aware of current style, colour and shapes in fashion.
